REVIEW

A very unusual and interesting film
about a gay man in an arrested state
of development with a crush on his
childhood lover.
A truly demented film written by the
"straight" son of Rev. Mel White (gay
preacher who worked with Jerry
Falwell) and directed by Miguel Arteta
(Star Maps). The story revolves
around Buck, an emotionally stunted
27 year-old gay man who is fixated on
his boyhood lover, Chuck. Buck sucks
lollypops constantly and has childish
taste in fashions, including a penchant
for "Members Only" jackets! Buck's
mom just died and he contacts his
boyhood "friend". Chuck is now Charlie
and he's engaged to be married. He
comes to the funeral and off-hand
invites Buck for a visit. Buck not only
came for a visit, he moved to LA and
camped out across from Chuck's office
for a nice long stalk. Buck hangs out at
the theater across from Chuck's office
and befriends the theater manager,
Beverly, beautifully played by Lupe
Ontiveros. Buck writes a play, "Hank
and Frank" about his experiences,
which Beverly calls "a homoerotic,
mysogynistic love story". An
entertaining film if one takes this as
Buck's story, certainly not a bellwether
gay person! The film was originally
shot on video and transferred to film
with less than perfect results.

"The most resonant and haunting
movie I've seen this year."
