Doing Time on Maple Drive

SYNOPSIS

Finally on DVD! Doing Time on Maple Drive is an affecting and well executed portrait of a gay teen
coming out.

REVIEW

An unusually affecting, sensitively handled and gay-positive made-for-TV drama which marked the
directorial debut for actor Ken Olin ("thirtysomething"). Teenager Matt (William McNamara), a star
athlete and honor student comes to grips about his homosexuality to both himself and his parents.
The revelation strips away the veneer of the "typical" suburban American family and exposes their
repressed dysfunctionalities, including alcoholism, abortion, school difficulties and Matt's
homosexualty. Matt's confrontation with his parents occurs after he attempts suicide in the family car.
When he returns home, he explains, "It's better to be dead than to tell you I'm gay." Jim Carrey also
appears as Matt's drunken brother Tim.
