EVIL Available from the 27th June 2006
SYNOPSIS
Reminiscent of Young Toerless, this Oscar nominated drama stars Andreas Wilson as a teenager in 1950s Sweden who’s packed off to boarding school because of his involvement in a series of fights. Within the rigid confines of Stjarnsberg, Erik (Wilson) discovers an inflexible student hierarchy enforced by sadistic violence. At risk of being expelled, Erik is forced to use guile to survive—until the possibility of friendship and love presents him a means of escape.
REVIEW
"You are completely evil," so said the headmaster of the public school Erik was booted out of for fighting. In this stylishly homo-erotic movie, a story of redemption and coming-of-age is told with a twist.
Erik is bright, has good grades and sets swimming records. He also has a nasty habit of beating other school boys to a pulp. After the aforementioned fierce expulsion, Erik's parents send him to a boarding school with his last chance to straighten up and get ready for college. Prepared to control his temper and become an adult, Erik enounters a system of violent cruelty he can't abide. He also encounters his first real friend, his bookish and effeminate room-mate Pierre. The senior students mete out punishment for offenses, both real and imagined with such violence Erik's hackles rise almost immediately. There are staged fights, random room searches, beatings with hard objects – all sorts of cruelty. But Erik keeps his cool and fight back against the system using his wiles, not his fists. And the reason for this new-found temper is Pierre. While the film-makers never say Pierre is gay, it's obvious for the tuned-in film-lover. As the violence escalates will Erik keep calm? Will the boy's friendship endure?
Shot with a visual panache seldom seen in coming-of-age films, Evil is a deliciously scripted and acted treat. (Swedish with English subtitles)
