FORMULA 17 (available from November 29th 2005)
SYNOPSIS
Filled with adorable eye candy, this campy critical favorite from Taiwan tells the story of a young man who tries to balance his desire to lose his virginity with his need for true love.
REVIEW
From Taiwan comes the wonderfully campy and critically acclaimed Formula 17, where the bookish, cute and quite gay 17-year-old Tien-Tsai heads from his small town to Taipei for the summer. Once in the big city, his childhood friend Yu tries to arrange for Tien-Tsai to lose his virginity, only to be confounded by Tien-Tsai's avowal that he must be in love first. Yu, drag queen CC, and fitness club manager Alan arrange for a variety of sexual encounters, all of which Tien-Tsai eschews (his favorite book is "Love Is a Kind of Faith"). Instead, Tien-Tsai falls for the notorious Taipei gay playboy Bai, who has an emotional luggage caravan of intimacy issues - and is infamous for his penchant for one-night stands. What's a cute boy to do? Will Tien-Tsai end up as another of Bai's one-night stands, or will Bai be able to articulate his feelings of love?
Director D.J. Chen juggles comedy and angst like a circus pro, Tony Yang is convincing as the lovestruck Tien-Tsai, and Chin King steals the show as the hilarious gossip queen Yu. (English, Mandarin, Cantonese with English subtitles)
