REVIEW - SWOON

The scandalous 1924 murder trial of
Nathan Leopold and Richard Loeb for
the inexplicable murder of a young boy
is given a slightly tilted, definitely New
Queer Cinema treatment in this
intriguing feature. Lovers Leopold and
Loeb, both intelligent college students
from wealthy Jewish families, get their
visceral and sexual kicks in petty
crimes. Their intense but perverted
love culminates in a bungled scheme
to kidnap a boy, resulting in the boy's
cold-blooded killing. The two are
eventually tracked down, arrested,
tried and sentenced. Director Kalin's
interest lies less in the horrendous act
and more with their secretive, intense
and self-destructive relationship. A
controversial, compelling story.
