SYNOPSIS - THE HANGING GARDEN

A challenging family drama set in Nova
Scotia about a young gay man who
returns home for a wedding to find a
family in disarray.

REVIEW

This impressively mature first feature
from Thom Fitzgerald
(Beefcake)examines the emotional
tribulations of a family on the brink of
destruction. With a screenplay by
Fitzgerald, the story is set in a Nova
Scotia home where the extended family
is reunited for a wedding. William, a
young man who left the family as an
obese, unhappy and closeted
teenager, now returns for his sister's
wedding after a 10-year absence. He
returns thin, attractive, openly gay and
with a great deal of pent-up rage
towards his family. But the family
members also have their
disappointments, sorrows, fears and
collective disillusionment.

Told with biting humor, symbolism and
moments of surrealism (William's
memories of his schoolboy love, who is
marrying his sister begin to stir long
buried memories.) Reminiscent of Jane
Campion's Sweetie, the film adroitly
balances the ranging emotions of its
characters; the result being an
involving, unsettling but moving story.
